7 Hidden Fees on Your Processing Statement (And How to Eliminate Them)

Most merchants are paying fees they do not even know about. Learn how to spot batch fees, PCI non-compliance charges, statement fees, and other hidden costs buried in your monthly processing statement.

Your credit card processing statement is one of the most confusing documents your business receives every month. That is by design. Many processors bury extra fees in fine print, knowing most merchants will never question them.

Here are seven hidden fees to look for on your next statement:

1. PCI Non-Compliance Fee — If your processor charges a monthly PCI non-compliance fee ($19.95-$99.95/month is common), it means you have not completed your annual PCI self-assessment questionnaire. Some processors charge this fee indefinitely and make the compliance process intentionally difficult. At Optec, we help every merchant achieve and maintain PCI compliance at no additional cost.

2. Statement Fee — A monthly charge ($5-$25) for generating your processing statement. In 2026, there is no reason to pay for a PDF. Optec provides free online reporting and statements.

3. Batch Fee — A small charge ($0.10-$0.35) every time you settle (batch out) your terminal at the end of the day. If you batch daily, that is $3-$10/month for nothing. Optec does not charge batch fees.

4. Regulatory Product Fee / Compliance Fee — A vague monthly fee ($4.95-$14.95) that processors claim covers regulatory costs. It is pure margin for them. We do not charge it.

5. Annual Fee — Some processors charge an annual membership fee ($49-$299) on top of your monthly costs. If you are paying one, ask why.

6. Early Termination Fee (ETF) — If you are locked into a contract, canceling early can cost $295-$595 or even a percentage of your remaining term. Optec offers month-to-month agreements with no ETFs.

7. Markup Padding — The most insidious hidden cost is not a named fee at all. Many processors inflate the interchange rates on your statement, adding basis points to the pass-through cost without disclosing it. The only way to catch this is a line-by-line analysis comparing your statement rates to published interchange tables.
